When women come to live in one of the 65 units in YWCA Hamilton’s Transitional Living Program, they carry with them everything they own. Some have experienced homelessness for many years, while others are struggling to find housing for the first time. Many suffer from addiction, mental illness, and violence. They all struggle with food insecurity.

Providing a safe place for women to call home is one of YWCA Hamilton’s biggest priorities. This fall, we acquired Phoenix Place, a long-time community partner with a shared mission and common vision of building a safe community for all women and children. This new partnership will allow YWCA Hamilton to provide safe housing to a small number of women and their children, while allowing Phoenix Place to continue its 20-year history of providing safe, affordable second stage housing to women and their children fleeing violence and abuse.

For both the women in our Transitional Living Program and the women at Phoenix Place access to healthy nutritious food is a daily challenge. They often end up in line at food banks, always worrying about where their next meal is coming from. Finding affordable housing and employment is next to impossible for our residents who are hungry.

“Finding a safe place to live has given me a roof over my head and a support system. But without food to eat, I’m still forced to stand in line at a food bank or beg on the street. It’s impossible for me to move forward when I don’t have food to eat.” — YWCA Hamilton Transitional Living Program resident

YWCA Hamilton recognizes the importance of providing nutritional meals and food security to women; however, the reality is that we do not have the funds necessary to provide meals on a consistent daily basis. Through YWCA Hamilton’s social enterprise, At the Table, we do our best.

At the Table is a catering, wholesale, and café that generates revenue to provide women with healthy meals, while also providing employment and training opportunities to help women gain meaningful employment in the food sector. Our goal is to one day provide women who live at the YWCA with a warm, nutritious meal every day.

Barriers to food are a daily challenge at YWCA Hamilton, but together, we can change that. This holiday season, we’re asking you to give the gift of a nutritious meal. YWCA Hamilton is dependent on the support of our friends and donors who believe strongly in our mission of providing essential and meaningful services that promote safe, inclusive, and equitable communities. As we continue to work toward building a city free of violence for women, we look to you for your support

When women come to YWCA Hamilton and Phoenix Place, they feel hopeless and invisible. They feel like nobody cares. This holiday season, we are asking you to give differently. By contributing to YWCA Hamilton, you’re sending a message to all women in our community, telling them that they matter.

Your gift will make a significant difference in the lives of women in our community. Together we can build a brighter future for women and their families.
