Did you Know?

  • Over 50% of Canadian women have experienced abuse or sexual violence, and thousands of children have been exposed to it.
  • YWCA Hamilton’s Family Access Centre, a critical safe space where court-ordered visitations and exchanges between children and their non-custodial parent or other family members can be facilitated free of conflict, violence, or pressure on children, has a wait list of 6-8 months, which is expected to increase.
  • Domestic violence remains the number one call for police service in Hamilton. On average Hamilton police respond to 20 domestic violence calls per day.
  • In any given month, over 400 women are being turned away from emergency shelters due to a lack of space.
  • The majority of women’s homelessness is invisible, meaning they live temporarily with others but without guarantee of continued residency or permanent housing.
  • Hamilton’s single women have the highest poverty rate amongst all Ontario cities.
  • Older women in Hamilton are two times more likely to live in poverty than older men.
  • Nearly 12% of households in Hamilton report food insecurity due to income, meaning uncertainty over whether they can put food on the table.
