YWCA Volunteer Positions
 
Seniors Peer Connector (55+)
  • YWCA Hamilton’s Seniors Peer Connector Program is a volunteer initiative available for seniors in Hamilton who are socially isolated and experiencing barriers to participate in the community. The program provides free in-home support for isolated seniors to identify their interests and available activities in the community and may provide accompaniment to activities and appointments. The program involves weekly in-home visits from a trained Peer Connector volunteer.
  • Volunteers will be 55 years or older, and will provide companionship and/or practical support to connect participants to activities to reduce social isolation and encourage physical activity.
  • Weekly visits, 2-3hrs plus travel time, flexible schedule
Good Beginnings Volunteer
  • Good Beginnings is a volunteer assistance program available for mothers in Hamilton and the surrounding area with infants younger than six months of age. The program provides free in-home support for mothers to help them cope with the challenges of having a new baby, and/or for women who are at risk of postpartum depression.
  • The program involves weekly in-home visits from a trained (female) volunteer who can effectively support mothers for the first six months post-partum.
  • Weekly visits, 2-3hrs plus travel time, flexible schedule (no evenings or weekends)
Girls /Children Program Assistant
  • YWCA Hamilton offers a wide variety of programming for children age 4-15. All programs offer participants a safe place to be active, healthy and make new friends. Programs include children’s summer camps, after school programs and Friday night girls club.
  • Volunteers will provide leadership and assist staff in implementing the programs, ensuring the girls are safe and engaged in unique, valuable, curriculum-based programs. They will foster healthy relationships and engage in a positive manner.
  • Weekdays (2:30-5:30 approx.), Summer, December and March Breaks
Be the Recipe for Change
  • Be the Recipe for Change is an initiative of At the Table, YWCA Hamilton’s social enterprise that has an objective of providing training opportunities and healthy meals to women who access the Transitional Living Program.
  • Volunteers support the social mission of the enterprise by serving food to the women of the transitional living program and engaging with donors.
  • Morning (8:30-10:30) or Evening (4:30-7:30)
BINGO Volunteer
  • Bingo volunteers support the YWCA by assisting the Bingo team on its scheduled event days at Princess Bingo. Volunteers should have good basic math skills and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Once a month (Friday or Sunday evening)
Transitional Living: Program Assistant
  • The Transitional Living Program provides safe and affordable temporary housing for up to eleven months for women at risk and struggling with the impact of poverty, homelessness and violence. The program offers a 65 bed residence for women, along with case management support, goal planning, skills building, employment support, supportive counseling and crisis intervention.
  • Volunteers will facilitate group recreation or information sessions with the women.
  • Volunteers must be able to engage and motivate the residents, and be able to take initiative in leading a group of women.
  • You will bring own skills, knowledge and experience to the volunteer position and lead a group based around these attributes.
  • Weekly or biweekly shifts, weekday and weekend positions available
Daycare Assistant
  • YWCA Hamilton offers fully licensed child care programs for toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. Qualified, caring staff engage children in programs designed to nurture each child’s natural sense of curiosity. Physical, outdoor, creative, educational, and play based activities foster a stimulating, safe and fun environment in which to grow and learn.
  • Volunteers will assist staff in providing programs for children, performing light housekeeping duties, and participating in indoor and outdoor activities. Volunteers will work in a team environment, engaging and nurturing healthy relationships with the children.
  • Flexible shifts, weekdays (8-5pm)
Fitness Centre Support
  • YWCA Hamilton takes a holistic approach to health and wellness that focuses on mind, body, and spirit. Ours is a safe, supportive, and enjoyable environment for users to pursue their health and wellness goals. Whether training for a key competition, expanding health horizons or looking for balance in life, we've got experienced instructors, engaging classes, and a welcoming environment to help users succeed!
  • Volunteers will help members of the fitness centre with the equipment and provide motivation for achieving their goals
  • Flexible shifts, weekdays and evening shifts available
Administrative Volunteer
  • YWCA Hamilton requires assistance with office and administrative work in each of its program areas.
  • Volunteers must be organized, have excellent communication skills, and the ability to take direction.
  • Volunteers must be proficient with MS Office, computers and accessing the internet.
  • 2-4hr shifts, Monday-Friday, 9:00-4:00
Resource Centre Assistant
  • The Resource Centre offers a variety of training sessions and skill upgrading opportunities. Services include access to internet, computer, printer, fax, phone, and photocopier. The centre offers job search information and resources, individual assistance for resume writing and interview coaching, and job search workshops.
  • Volunteers will greet those who are accessing the resource centre, assist with using the equipment, troubleshoot printer/computer issues and help with job searches etc.
  • Volunteers will have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Volunteers must be proficient with MS Office, computers and accessing the internet
  • 2-4 hour shifts Monday-Friday, 9:00-4:00
Interpreter
  • YWCA Hamilton’s Newcomer Settlement Program provides one on one settlement support to refugee claimants, convention refugees, permanent residents, and citizens.
  • Volunteers support the mission of the program by interpreting information from the Settlement Specialist to the client, ensuring accurate information is provided in the appropriate language.
  • Flexible, as scheduled
Young Women’s Advisory Council (YWAC)
  • The goal of YWAC is to provide a platform from which young women (age 16-29) in Hamilton can have their voice heard. By creating a network of women’s voices that is strong, unified, and heard by others, YWAC aims to bring young women together in ways that allow for safe, open discussion, providing an opportunity for growth and learning. YWAC is a way for young women to become active and make a concrete change that is meaningful to each woman as an individual, but also as part of a collective.
  • Monthly meetings (5-7pm)
Seniors Active Living Centre: Administrative Volunteer
  • YWCA Hamilton operates two Seniors' Active Living Centres that provide affordable programs and services for adults 55+ to enrich and support independent active living. A variety of health and wellness programs are offered to promote physical and emotional well-being; programs focusing on skill development and social programs to build community and build connections with other seniors.
  • Administrative volunteers are members of the seniors centre for greater than one year and will work at the reception desk, in the kitchen and the boutique.
  • weekly or biweekly, 2-4hr shifts, 9:00-4:00pm
Seniors Active Living Centre: Recreation/Group Facilitator
  • YWCA Hamilton operates two Seniors' Active Living Centres that provide affordable programs and services for adults 55+ to enrich and support independent active living. A variety of health and wellness programs are offered to promote physical and emotional well-being; programs focusing on skill development and social programs to build community and build connections with other seniors.
  • Volunteers will lead a group of adults 55+ in a social activity.
  • Each volunteer will bring his/her own skills and interests to the centre and lead an appropriate activity for the group (eg game of cards, music appreciation)

Event/Committee Volunteer
  • YWCA Hamilton has many events that require assistance, leading up to the event and on the day of.  Events such as Women of Distinction, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, Road2Hope, and the Senior’s Spring Fair all require energetic and organized volunteers to help make the event a success.
  • Volunteers are involved at the committee level in the planning and execution of YWCA events. They will also assist with registration and other duties as assigned on the day of the event.
