Supervised parenting time in a safe, neutral and child-friendly environment

Supervised Parenting Services offers supervised parenting time and access alternatives in cases where safety is a concern. 

Trained staff support families while remaining neutral and not acting as an agent for either party. Services are structured to reduce conflict between parties while supporting safe and meaningful parent-child relationships

Our Programs

Services are available through two program options

Supervised Parenting Services

Supervised Parenting Services is a transfer payment program funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS). Parenting time takes place in a supervised group environment, with trained staff supporting multiple families within the program space.

Fees are associated with this program. A sliding fee scale is available based on income, with proof of income required.

There is currently a waiting list for service.

Access Alternatives

Access Alternatives is our enhanced fee-for-service program. Families receive individualized, one-to-one staff support during parenting time. This program also includes goal setting and visit planning to help families create safe, meaningful and child-focused parenting experiences.

On-Site Parenting Time

• Takes place at the supervised parenting centre
• Provides a safe, neutral and child friendly setting
• Parent and child(ren) are fully supervised by trained staff at all times
• Factual observation notes are taken
• Families may bring approved items from home
• Provides face-to-face time to build rapport and connection in a safe and meaningful way​ 
  

Virtual Parenting Time

• Takes place remotely, with each party joining from a separate location
• Fully supervised by trained staff
• Factual observation notes are taken
• May be the most appropriate form of contact or may be used alongside another service
• Allows families to share aspects of their everyday lives, such as introducing pets or touring pre-approved spaces
• Staff appear on screen at the beginning and end of the visit but remain present throughout and can intervene at any time to provide support or help maintain emotional comfort

Registration and Intake Process

Registration

Both parties must contact the office and complete the required registration process.

Court Order or Written Agreement

The office must receive a current court order or written agreement outlining the supervised parenting arrangements.

Criminal Court Documentation

Copies of all relevant criminal court documents must be provided. This may include: Bail conditions, probation orders, restraining orders, peace bonds and other court orders or conditions that may affect service deliver. Other relevant documents will also be collected, such as child welfare documents, assessments, etc.

Individual Intake Appointments

Separate intake appointments are conducted with both parties. During these appointments staff learn the family's circumstances, explain program policies and expectations, and assess whether services can safely and appropriately meet the needs of the family.

Child Orientation and First Service Date

If the file is approved to move forward, a child orientation is completed. The family is then provided with a first service date based on program availability

Completion of this intake process does not guarantee acceptance into either program. Services are subject to suitability, safety considerations, program availability, and current wait times.

Telephone Access

• Takes place through a telephone conference system
• Audio only 
• Fully supervised by trained staff
• Factual observation notes are taken throughout the call
• May be offered on its own or in conjunction with another service
• May be appropriate when on-site or virtual parenting time presents a significant safety concern

Exchange of Electronic Correspondence

• Provides monitored email exchanges through the service
• Allows emails, photographs, letters and other approved materials to be shared safely
• Staff review materials and determine what may be forwarded based on program guidelines
• Supports monitored communication when direct communication may not be safe or appropriate
• May be used on its own or in conjunction with another service

Supervised Exchanges

• The service acts as a safe drop-off and pick-up location so the parties do not have to meet
• Staggered arrival and departure times are used to prevent contact between parties
• the receiving parent may spend time with the child(ren) at home or in the community for a specified period
• The child(ren) may return through the service or another approved location such as school
• Factual observation notes are taken
• Children are protected from witnessing adult conflict or violence during drop-off and pick-up
